Planner: We planted 400 trees across six districts, and 91 percent survived their first summer. Should we expand the program? Ecologist: Survival is encouraging, but the sample favors streets with wider sidewalks and established irrigation. Narrower, hotter blocks remain underrepresented. Residents' group representative: Those are often the streets with the least shade. Counting trees tells us where planting occurred, not whether people can use the shade or feel safer walking there. Planner: We could map afternoon surface temperatures and hold walk-throughs at different times. Ecologist: Yes, and report results by block type; an average could conceal the gaps. Representative: Include maintenance funding, too. Trees that survive one summer still need care. Planner: Then our next phase should test a wider range of streets before we set a citywide target.
