Curator A: The label calls the object a “gift,” repeating the donor's description. That may imply consent where the record is silent. Curator B: I agree the wording is too certain. Still, replacing it with “acquired” could conceal the power imbalance behind the transfer. Curator A: Then we should state what the archive confirms and what remains disputed. We can invite community responses, but asking visitors to resolve the uncertainty would shift our responsibility onto them. Curator B: Yes. Consultation can identify whose account is missing; it cannot substitute for the museum's own judgment about evidence. We might describe the documented exchange, name the dispute, and explain why the earlier label is being revised. Curator A: That approach is more transparent, provided the text does not present one consultation as a single community view.
